The Institution of Engineers (India), in pursuance to its policy and principles embodied in the Royal Charter, further diversified its activities in search of avenues of services to the nation. In this context, the Institution of Engineers (India) opened its new limb in the form of the Sustainable Development Forum in 1998.
The Sustainable Development Forum(SDF) was thus established pursuant to the resolution of the Council of the Institution of Engineers (India) on April 4-5, 1998, at Tirupati in 1998 for developing and promoting the advancement of engineering for sustainable development in totality. The Forum not only undertake specific programmes pertaining to sustainable development in collaboration with central and state governments but also evolves and makes policy recommendations in the field of sustainable development.
On September 25, 2015, 193 Heads of State at the United Nations General Assembly set 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs). The SDGs and their 169 targets form the core of the Resolution of the United Nations, a breakthrough agreement called AGENDA 2030. The goals are to be achieved by all member states by the year 2030.
The goals call for action by all member states to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They are broad and and cover social, economic, and environmental issues; making them work is everyone's responsibility. 17 SDGs are briefly mentioned below-
